The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and the Faculty of Education co-operate in offering a concurrent six-year program combining a Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure Studies (BRLS) (Honours, Concentration in Outdoor Education) degree with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) for students interested in teaching at the Junior/Intermediate level (grades 4-10) with an emphasis on outdoor education. The Concurrent BRLS (Honours, Concentration in Outdoor Education)/BEd program enables students to develop core interdisciplinary skills in outdoor education/recreation, child and youth studies, kinesiology, and education in addition to the knowledge and dispositions to prepare them to work in a multitude of educational, adventure and recreational settings. Outdoor Education (OE) teaches subject content and uses the outdoors as a context for teaching and fostering physical and mental well-being, youth development, community building, and environmental sustainability. As a professional practice, outdoor education is both integrated into the traditional school system and offered in alternative educational opportunities offered by school boards, municipal recreation agencies, summer camps, colleges and universities, forest schools and for-profit service providers, among others. Students in the program have multiple outdoor education related field experiences, which involve engaging in outdoor education practices and pedagogy, technical skills training, risk management, outdoor leadership skill development, and place-based education, as well as several placements within formal classroom settings.
