Program Description

The Master of Arts in Sport Management (“SPMA”) offers robust, high-quality, individualized learning and mentorship-style research training through concentrated inquiry to students seeking to work in the diverse field of sport management. Through the completion of course work that complements the student’s key research area of focus, including core courses in sport management research theories, inquiry, and methodology, and elective courses spanning the diverse subdisciplines within the field (e.g., marketing and communications; management issues; governance policy and the law; social cultural), students gain the necessary in-depth training and knowledge base to complete a research thesis that contributes to the ongoing theoretical and practical development and understanding of the industry. The MA Sport Management provides the prerequisite background to pursue doctoral studies in sport management and/or prepare graduates to execute research projects that may be relevant for sport-industry stakeholders.

Facilities

The Department of Sport Management has several labs (e.g., the Canadian Sport Hub; Sport Allyship and Inclusion Lab) and/or centres (e.g., Centre for Sport Capacity) where students can work with faculty in specialized research areas. A common graduate student space is available for SPMA graduate student use. Students have access to a variety of software programs, including SPSS and other discipline-specific software.

Admission Requirements

Successful completion of a four-year Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline (for example, Recreation and Leisure Studies, or Sport Management), with an average of not less than 75% (mid-B) over the last two years of full-time undergraduate study. Students with a Bachelor’s degree in such related fields as Psychology, Planning, Sociology, and Business may also be eligible, although additional course work may be required. Applicants must have undergraduate preparation in research methods in either quantitative or qualitative data analysis. Applicants who do not have an undergraduate research methods course and/or an undergraduate data analysis course may be admitted to the program as a conditional student. These students, however, must successfully complete, at the undergraduate level, the research methods and/or data analysis course within the first two terms in order to continue in the program. Agreement from a faculty advisor to supervise the student is also required for admission to the program.

Applicants required to demonstrate English language proficiency must meet the standard minimum requirements established for graduate-level study.

The Master of Arts, Sport Management Graduate Program Committee will review all applications and recommend admission for a limited number of candidates.

Admission to part-time study is not available at this time. Individuals interested in part-time study should consult with the Graduate Program Director.

Degree Requirements

Total credits: 3.0

The SPMA program is designed as a two-year program that culminates in a thesis. The research project for the thesis will be chosen in consultation with the student’s supervisor. Students are expected to complete their course requirements within the first three terms of study, and conclude all requirements within six academic terms (two years).
