Technological Education (BEd)

Location(s): Burlington Satelite Campus

Technological Education (Grades 9-12)

The Technological Education Program is primarily delivered online (with the exception of practicums). Teacher candidates in the program have two pathways to complete the program:

  1. as a Consecutive Technological Education teacher candidate and
  2. as a multi-session Consecutive Technological Education teacher candidate.

Teacher candidates in the Consecutive pathway complete the coursework and practica in 16 consecutive months. The multi-session pathway is one that is structured so teacher candidates become eligible to apply to the OCT for a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration when they have met the first session course work and practicum requirements of an accredited Teacher Education program. This transitional certificate allows Technological Education teacher candidates to teach for up to six years (with a possible one-year extension) as long as they remain in good standing with the OCT and complete the remainder of the program during this time. It is strongly recommended that, in order for a program of professional education to allow candidates to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes of beginning teachers, the program should be completed within the shortest time possible.

The Technological Education program supports five admissions pathways:

  1. Certificate of Qualification (CofQ) in a Skilled Trade and a Secondary School Diploma with a minimum of 5 years* of work experience related to the Broad-Based Technology (BBT) subject you will be qualified to teach.
  2. Two (2) Year College Diploma along with a minimum of 3 years* of work experience. The Diploma must be in the same area as the BBT subject you will be qualified to teach. The work experience must be in a minimum of 4 months continuous employment, in the same area as the BBT subject you will be qualified in.
  3. Three (3) Year College Advanced Diploma along with a minimum of 2 years* of work experience directly related to the BBT subject you will be qualified to teach. The Advanced Diploma must be in the same area as the BBT subject you will be qualified to teach. The work experience must be in a minimum of 4 months continuous employment.
  4. University or College Degree along with a minimum of 2 years* of work experience. The Degree must be in the same area as the BBT subject you will be qualified to teach. The work experience must be in a minimum of 4 months continuous employment.
  5. University or College Degree along with a minimum of 5 years of work experience, if the Degree is not aligned with the area in the BBT subject you will be qualified to teach. The work experience must be in a minimum of 4 months continuous employment.

Applicants without the above listed combinations of post-secondary education and work experience, holding OSSD and minimum five years of work experience, including business or industry experience, where the applicant used skills and knowledge in the area of the broad-based technological education subject selected by the applicant, may be considered for admission to the Technological Education program and will be eligible to receive a Certificate in Education. * Please note that 1 year = 1700 hours.
