Understanding the Calendar

About the Calendar

The Graduate Academic Calendar contains both academic and administrative information for students and faculty to reference. The Calendar holds the most current information on programs and courses, as well as rules and regulations as reflected on the Academic Regulations page.

The Calendar is published once a year (typically mid-Winter) with the aim of minimal updates and corrections made throughout the year, although these may occur without notice. The calendar takes effect on May 1 each year, which is the beginning of each academic year.

The course bank lists all courses owned by a given program, though note that not all courses are offered in every session (refer to the applicable term Academic Timetable for details).

The Calendar also includes program entries for each graduate program available at Brock University, with each page containing the following information:

  • General information (degree awarded, field(s) of specialization, description of the program)

  • Program website, including contact information for faculty, instructors, and other support staff

  • Admission requirements

  • Degree requirements (outlines all requirements to complete the program)

  • Program notes (highlighting any important notes to reference when completing your program of study)

For clarification about the information outlined in the Calendar, please contact the program and/or the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.

Understanding Course Codes

Understanding Course Descriptions

For a full list of graduate course offerings by subject area, please refer to the Courses  tab in the navigation menu.

Course descriptions in the Calendar outline key details that students should know before registering in a given course. Basic course information will be listed, such as the course code, title, and a short description of the course’s major topics covered, and additionally, course entries may include:

Restrictions: Outlines who may register in the course, by program. Some courses provide the option to contact the program for permission to register if a student is not enrolled in one of the programs listed. E.g. “Open to MA Sport Management students.”

Prerequisite(s): Lists other courses that must be successfully completed in advance to ensure students have enough prior knowledge of a given topic prior to registering in this course.

Co-requisite(s): Lists other courses that must be taken simultaneously with this course.

Cross-Listing(s): A cross-listed course is a single course that is offered under different subject codes. If applicable, any cross-listed courses must be listed in each corresponding course entry.

Course Note(s): Outlines any other information that should be known before a student registers in the course (fees, courses taught in conjunction, practicum details, credit/no-credit grading, etc.).

Exclusion(s): Indicates that a student cannot simultaneously hold credit in this course and any course listed as an exclusion due to significant overlap. If a student has already obtained credit in a course listed as an exclusion, they will lose credit in that excluded course should this course be completed. E.g. “Completion of this course will replace the previous assigned grade and credit obtained in KINE 5P60.”

Course Formats and Modes of Delivery

For details about specific course components (lectures, labs, etc.) and modes of delivery listed in the timetable, please refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs Graduate Course Registration webpage.

Note that not all courses listed in the calendar are offered in every session. Modes of delivery for individual courses are subject to change, and can differ across sections, terms, and years. Refer to the applicable term Academic Timetable for details.
